1st Shirley Rainbows’ first trip to the Bluebell Railway – 21st June 2025
On a sunny and very warm Saturday, the 1st Shirley Rainbows set off on their first-ever trip to the historic Bluebell Railway. It was part of the Railway200 event for Guiding and Scouting — and what a memorable day it turned out to be!

Full of excitement and energy, the Rainbows gathered early at East Croydon Station, ready for their adventure. Spirits were high despite the heat, and the group soon boarded the train to East Grinstead. Once they arrived, it was a short walk to the Bluebell Railway station, where the real magic began.

The Rainbows were thrilled to see the impressive steam train waiting for them at the platform. After boarding, they settled in for the scenic journey to Sheffield Park. Along the way, the Rainbows took part in a fun scavenger hunt, spotting different objects from their list as the train chugged through the countryside.

At Sheffield Park, the group enjoyed a well-deserved break for their packed lunches, followed by a visit to the railway SteamWorks museum. The Rainbows were fascinated to learn how steam trains work and loved exploring the interactive displays. There were smiles all around as they discovered the many different types of trains, both old and new.

One Rainbow shared, “It was very fun and amazing to see all the different types of trains. We saw all different types of trains and the last one looked really fancy!” Another said their favourite part was simply “going on the train and seeing all the beautiful views out the window.”

Even in the summer heat, the Rainbows showed great enthusiasm and resilience. The day was packed with learning, laughter, and lots of steam-powered fun. It was truly a fantastic experience for all, and one that the 1st Shirley Rainbows will remember for a long time to come!
